SANT CUGAT, Spagna, 15 giugno 2026 — Con il continuo aumento della specializzazione e dell’innovazione tecnologica in oftalmologia, cresce anche la domanda di formazione chirurgica pratica. Per rispondere a questa esigenza, BVI ha annunciato oggi l’apertura del BVI Experience Hub, una struttura dedicata alla formazione oftalmologica, allo sviluppo professionale e alla collaborazione clinica per chirurghi e team clinici provenienti dall’Europa e da tutto il mondo.

Situato presso gli uffici di BVI Iberia a Sant Cugat, in Spagna, l’Experience Hub riunisce strutture wetlab per la formazione pratica, un auditorium dedicato, sale per attività formative di gruppo e una sala operatoria simulata realistica per studi di ottimizzazione dei flussi di lavoro, test di usabilità e dimostrazioni di tecnologie oftalmologiche innovative. La struttura è stata progettata per supportare una vasta gamma di attività formative, tra cui programmi di training chirurgico, conferenze, workshop, riunioni di advisory board e iniziative di apprendimento collaborativo.

L’apertura riflette una tendenza più ampia nel settore sanitario verso la formazione continua e lo sviluppo di competenze pratiche, mentre nuove tecnologie, tecniche e opzioni terapeutiche continuano a trasformare la pratica clinica e chirurgica.

L’Experience Hub è completamente attrezzato con sistemi di facoemulsificazione e piattaforme Virtuoso dual-function, tecnologia LEOS per ECP/endoscopia, microscopi chirurgici e apparecchiature diagnostiche per supportare una formazione realistica nella chirurgia della cataratta e nelle procedure vitreoretiniche. Validazione clinica

Nell’ambito dell’impegno di BVI verso la collaborazione clinica e la generazione di evidenze scientifiche, Virtuoso® è attualmente oggetto di uno studio clinico pre-commercializzazione, prospettico, monocentrico e a braccio singolo presso il LMU Klinikum di Monaco di Baviera, Germania, guidato dal Professor Siegfried Priglinger. La prima procedura su un paziente è stata completata con successo nel dicembre 2025, segnando un importante traguardo clinico per la piattaforma.

“Durante questa prima fase della nostra valutazione clinica, Virtuoso® ha dimostrato un’integrazione attentamente sviluppata di stabilità della fluidica, reattività ed efficienza del flusso di lavoro, progettata tenendo conto delle esigenze reali delle procedure combinate di chirurgia della cataratta e chirurgia vitreoretinica. Attendiamo con interesse di continuare a valutarne le prestazioni nel proseguimento dello studio,” ha dichiarato il Prof. Siegfried Priglinger, Direttore del Dipartimento di Oftalmologia del LMU Klinikum.

I congressi EURETINA, ESCRS e FloRETINA del 2025 hanno presentato i primi abstract scientifici dedicati a Virtuoso® nei rispettivi programmi scientifici. I dati relativi al fenomeno di surge post-occlusione hanno dimostrato la capacità del sistema di ripristinare rapidamente la stabilità della IOP. Ulteriori risultati hanno evidenziato la costanza nell’erogazione dell’energia, supportando la capacità di mantenere livelli energetici target e consentendo l’utilizzo di impostazioni energetiche inferiori. Sono stati inoltre osservati miglioramenti nell’efficienza di aspirazione rispetto alle principali piattaforme concorrenti, sia nel BSS sia nel vitreo, oltre a una maggiore rigidità del cutter senza comprometterne l’efficienza anche a elevati livelli di flessione. Questa base scientifica è stata ulteriormente consolidata nel 2026 durante il Munich Retina Meeting, dove Virtuoso® è stata utilizzata nella sua prima chirurgia dal vivo, dimostrandone le prestazioni in un contesto chirurgico reale.

Virtuoso® è posizionata per competere nel segmento più avanzato dei sistemi chirurgici oftalmologici, supportando i professionisti che ricercano piattaforme flessibili, scalabili ed economicamente vantaggiose. Il sistema rafforza inoltre la proposta di valore di BVI attraverso un’integrazione fluida con il proprio portafoglio in espansione di materiali di consumo e lenti intraoculari. Hollingshead assume la carica precedentemente ricoperta da Shervin Korangy, che continuerà a fungere da consulente di BVI e assumerà un nuovo ruolo come consulente senior di TPG Capital.

Hollingshead apporta un’esperienza più che ventennale nella dirigenza e nella crescita di aziende attive nel settore dei dispositivi medici e delle scienze della vita; di recente ha ricoperto il ruolo di CEO di Insulet, innovativa azienda leader nella somministrazione di insulina. Durante il mandato di Hollingshead, Insulet ha rafforzato la propria leadership di mercato grazie all’ampliamento dell’offerta di prodotti, tra cui il lancio del primo sistema di somministrazione automatica di insulina con microinfusore in cerotto del settore. The milestone marks the final implantation of the 539^th patient enrolled in the prospective, multicenter, randomized, masked, controlled IDE clinical study.  Patients will now be followed to evaluate the safety and performance of the FINEVISION HP intraocular lens, with the results to form the basis for a regulatory submission to obtain marketing approval in the United States.

The new regulatory criteria came into effect in May 2021, replacing the prior Medical Device Directive (MDD).

The MDR, representing the most significant change to European regulatory framework in decades, ensures a consistently high level of health and safety for medical devices. The new provisions focus on:

• Strict requirements with the intention to prove the safety of medical devices for both users and patients;
• Increased transparency of clinical evaluation, post market surveillance, and clinical investigation that needs to be up to date, clear, convincing, and publicly available;
• Greater emphasis on detailed requirements for technical documentation;
• Increased control and monitoring by national competent authorities and the EC;
• Reclassification of devices, wider scope of devices; and
• New Unique Device Identification system with enhanced traceability and post-market surveillance.
